The region Cortona
Like the sea, with its beaches, ferry-boats, islands, rocks and fishermen, Lake Trasimene is one of the enchanted hearts of Italy, the largest body of water south of the Apennines, on the border between Umbria and Tuscany.
Isola Maggiore is the only inhabited island of the lake: with a tiny population,it is a island of great beauty, famous for the women who, for almost a century, make lovely Irish lace. Isola Polvese, off the coast of San Feliciano, hides a villa which in summer becomes a theatre for concerts of the Umbria Jazz Festival. Isola Minore is uninhabited and covered with a dense forest. Rolling hills separate the northern shore of the lake from the Val di Chiana. On the slopes of these hills stands Cortona, another jewel of Tuscany. Its palazzi are built of sandstone, its wooden balconies mark the Medieval streets and superb piazze. Further north, the art cities of Anghiari and Sansepolcro, birthplace of Piero della Francesca.
