Region information Lucca/Pisa

The region Lucca/Pisa

The main street of Lucca has a curious name: “Il Filungo.” A street of silence and pleasure, the only noises are the voices of people as they walk by and the chiming bells of Romanesque churches. “Il Filungo” is the heart of Lucca, beautiful and tranquil city of the main routes of mass tourism. It connects the marble facade of the Duomo with Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, the city’s unique and elegant “drawing-room.” In an aisle of the Cathedral, the sarcophagus of Ilaria Del Carretto: the moving masterpiece of Jacopo Della Quercia.
The famous walls of Lucca conceal splendid palazzi. A square tower stands out over the red shingled roofs, Torre Guinigi. On top of this Medieval construction, the people of Lucca planted two trees in hopes of making it lean and rival the Leaning Tower of Pisa. At the end of May, the Medieval streets of Lucca host the city’s archers and their rivals from Massa Marittima in the Palio della Balestra. Outside the city walls, the slopes of the Apennines are dotted with superb villas from Segromigno to Camigliano, from Matraia to Marlia, the triumph of rural noble architecture in Tuscany. Close by is the birthplace of a famous puppet: Pinocchio was born in Collodi, at the gates of Lucca.
